The American Communities Project leveraged data from Four Twenty Seven, a physical climate risk data firm and affiliate of Moody’s, to understand how the risks manifest and where populations and infrastructure may be especially vulnerable.
In 2024, there were 27 confirmed weather/climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each to affect United States. These events included 1 drought event, 1 flooding event, 17 severe storm events, 5 tropical cyclone events, 1 wildfire event, and 2 winter storm events.
The Climate Explorer is a tool developed by NOAA that projects how climate conditions in the United States may change over the coming decades. It provides data for all U.S. counties and county equivalents, based on global climate models. The tool is designed to help community leaders, businesses, and planners understand potential climate impacts and develop adaptation strategies.
To understand how climate change will impact major cities across the United States, real estate company, CLEVER, gathered and analyzed available public data from Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN).
We looked at the 100 most populated cities and developed a ranking system to identify which cities will be most affected by climate change. We then created an impact metric to look at how each city will be impacted by specific climate change-related disasters.
A destabilized climate is exacerbating the severity of extreme weather events, worsening infectious and chronic diseases, and intensifying social and economic stresses. Some U.S. communities have access to resources that help them prepare, endure, and recover from these impacts. Many do not. Decades of racist housing and infrastructure development, unequal protection of environmental laws, labor market discrimination, and other systemic issues have created disparities and disadvantages across America – making it harder to withstand the devastating effects of climate change.
